The New Year is always an exciting time, "New Year, New Me."  Here are a couple of things we recommend doing or working on to start 2017 out right when it comes to insurance and your possessions:

1) Make a home inventory.  Making a list of high priced items or taking photos and saving them in your email or in a cloud can help you in the event of a loss.  It is recommended to take photos of your closets and rooms a couple of times a year to make the claim reporting process smoother should you need to do so.  Be sure if you have high priced items or jewelry, it is scheduled on your homeowners or tenants policy, as there are often limits on special items.

2) Read your policies.  Know your limits and know what is covered.  Have questions?  Contact us and we would be happy to explain to you what your policy is saying and what is or is not covered.

3) Quit smoking.  Not only will this possibly give you a discount on your home insurance policies (non-smoking discount- depending on the company), but it will also in many cases reduce your premium on your health insurance.

4) Improve your credit.  Believe it or not, your insurance credit score plays a heavy factor when rating with most of our carriers.  Studies show the better your credit is, the more likely you are to take care of your property and drive safer.  Often times poor credit can have as much of an impact as an at fault accident (depends on the carrier).

5) Check your smoke detectors and replace your fire extinguishers.  Make sure your smoke detectors are functioning properly- they say batteries should be changed twice a year, and get a fire extinguisher if you don't already have one.

6) Life Insurance.  Look into purchasing life insurance if you don't already have a policy.  Typically the younger you are, the cheaper the policy will be.  Be sure to tell your beneficiaries about any life insurance policies as well.

7) NYS Defensive Driver Course.  Have you taken the NYS Defensive Driver course yet?  It is now available online; a 6 hour course at $25, and saves you 10% on your liability, PIP, and collision for 3 years!  Once you complete it, give us a copy and we will submit to your carrier for that annual savings.
